On Saturday August 15th around 12:45pm, the WBFD was dispatched to Blue Marsh Lake in Lower Heidelberg Township for a rescue of an injured horseback rider. While units were responding, Berks DES advised that there was one injured horseback rider who was thrown from the horse and could not make it off the trail. Upon gathering further information regarding the incident, our ATV’s were added to the assignment to gain access to the area and assist in removal of the patient. The rough location of the rider was at mile marker 9 on the Blue Marsh main hiking trail and crews utilized the closest trailhead off Justa Road to make access to the trail system. ATV 18-3 and ATV 18-4 were deployed from the trailhead and made patient contact within 7 minutes, which was almost a mile from the access point. The patient was removed from the trail in approximately 20 minutes after first contact. Ladder 18, Rescue 18, ATV 18-3 and ATV 18-4 were on scene for approximately 1 hour. We were assisted by Western Berks Ambulance Association and Blue Marsh Park Rangers.
