Fire Prevention

The WBFD participates in several community events throughout the year which focus on fire prevention. Here are some tips that could help you prevent a fire or other catastrophic incidents in your home:

Practice fire drills and make an escape plan.

Make sure you have at least two points of escape in your home. Choose a meeting point outside and away from your home. It is best to practice this drill at least two times a year and make sure to close doors behind you as you are exiting your home.

Install smoke detectors on every floor and in every bedroom.

Smoke detectors give an early warning sign and are a key part to a home fire escape plan. Test smoke detectors once per month. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. Carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced every 7 years.

Consider using flameless candles.

Candles may look pretty and smell good however, they are a cause to home fires.

Be alert when cooking.

Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or broiling food. Stay in the home when simmering, baking, roasting or boiling food. Check it regularly and set timers to remind yourself.

If you have any questions or concerns about fire prevention or safety in your home or community, feel free to contact the WBFD and we will be more than happy to help.

The department was organized and placed “in-service” on August 8, 2009, designated as Berks County Company 18, when the four legacy departments from four separate municipalities were consolidated into one comprehensive department.
