About Western Berks Fire Department

The Western Berks Fire Department is a combination fire department in Berks County Pennsylvania which serves the residents of Sinking Spring Borough, Wernersville Borough, South Heidelberg Township and Lower Heidelberg Township.  The department was organized and placed “in-service” on August 8, 2009, designated as Berks County Company 18, when the four legacy departments from four separate municipalities were consolidated into one comprehensive department.

The department protects over 18,000 residents and hundreds of businesses in an area covering over 32 square miles.  Our coverage area consists of residential neighborhoods, industrial areas, educational facilities, agricultural facilities, major rail and highway transportation corridors and a number of hazardous materials facilities. The department consists of four stations, which houses (4) Engines, (1) Ladder, (1) Rescue, (1) Tanker, (1) Marine unit, (2) ATV’s, and (2) Utility vehicles.  In 2019 the department responded to over 1050 calls for service.

Western Berks Fire Department

Earlier this evening around 5:30pm the WBFD was dispatched to the 100 block of Belle Alto Road in South Heidelberg Township for a dumpster fire. As units went responding Berks DES advised of a dumpster that was being loaded with scrap vehicles had caught on fire. Fire crews arrived on scene and confirmed the report, had smoke and flames showing from the dumpster which was in close proximity of a barn. Engine 18-1 arrived and went in service with their deck gun to quickly knock down the bulk of the fire which was a potential threat to the nearby structure. A single handline was then deployed as additional resources arrived on scene to put out the remaining fire. Fire crews used a rotary saw to cut access points into the lower portion of the dumpster to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. The WBFD operated on scene for approximately 1 hour before returning. We were assisted by Tanker 42 from Cumru Township Fire Department and the South Heidelberg Township Police Department. ...
