Operations Overview

This cooperative effort led to discussions with their host local governments on the possibility of combining into a single fire department.

Who Are We?

The Western Berks Fire Department is combination fire department in Berks County, Pennsylvania that was founded in August 2009 as a result of four individual fire companies merging. The department is made up of career firefighters and volunteer firefighters. The WBFD is comprised of four stations, Station 18-1, Station 18-2, Station 18-3, and Station 18-4. Together, the four stations make up Berks County Company 18.

The primary coverage area of the Western Berks Fire Department consists of Wernersville Borough, Sinking Spring Borough, South Heidelberg Township, and Lower Heidelberg Township where service is provided to over 22,000 residents.

What Services Do We Provide?

The Western Berks Fire Department responds to over 1,200 calls each year. With (4) Engines, (1) Ladder, (1) Rescue, (1) Tanker, (2) Marine units, (2) ATV’s, (2) Utility vehicles and a Drone Unit we are ready to serve our community at a moment's notice.

The WBFD’s first due also includes parts of the Conrad Weiser Area School District and the Wilson School District.

The WBFD participates in several community events throughout the year which focus on fire prevention.

Here are some tips that could help you prevent a fire or other catastrophic incidents in your home
  • Practice fire drills and make an escape plan.
  • Install smoke detectors on every floor and in every bedroom.
  • Consider using flameless candles.
  • Be alert when cooking.
Training

How Does the WBFD Train to Serve Your Community?

Each year, members of the WBFD participate in over 4,600 hours of training. Training is mentally and physically demanding and includes but is not limited to:
  • Fire suppression and rescue
  • Vehicle rescue
  • Water rescue
  • Hazardous materials training and familiarization
  • CPR/AED
  • First aid

The Western Berks Fire Department offers both volunteer and career opportunities
When looking to join the Western Berks Fire Department, an individual should understand that the process of membership approval could take up to a month after the application is received. Once the application is received, the necessary background checks are obtain and then the application will be presented within the departments monthly meeting, which occurs on the third Tuesday of the month.
The department was organized and placed “in-service” on August 8, 2009, designated as Berks County Company 18, when the four legacy departments from four separate municipalities were consolidated into one comprehensive department.
